The night and the forest, these are the places where the early Romantics felt at home. Not the bright, rational light of the ‘Enlightenment’ or the business of the city, but the starry sky and the forest, with all their real and imaginary denizens, inspired them to create the most beautiful songs and poems. The same was true of Franz Schubert, who we know enjoyed leaving Vienna to come to himself in nature. His songs and choral works are therefore teeming with rustling leaves, babbling brooks, singing nightingales and darting fish. But Schubert’s music does more than simply paint nature. As befits a true romantic, his music is chiefly about the emotions that nature evokes in the individual. Ex Tempore performs several of his most sombre works for male choir.
