For STROOM, the international artists' collective Plastique Fantastique, in collaboration with Gluon, developed a spatial installation in the polders of Kruibeke. The public is invited to enter a giant structure on the banks of the Scheldt - a sculpture that breathes, sounds and moves.
Inside, you will find three large plastic layers, like rings around each other. Each ring is made of a different kind of plastic - from classic fossil to modern bioplastic. Together, they tell the story of how we are evolving in our use of raw materials: from polluting industry to a future with more focus on recycling and cycles.
Balancing between art, science and alchemy, the installation is accompanied by a soundscape in which nature and culture merge. Plastique Fantastique invites the audience to enter imaginary worlds within reality.
The installation was at the United Nations Ocean Conference in Nice (FR) from 9 to 13 June 2025 and will move directly to STROOM.
On Saturday 21 June, we will activate the installation with a lecture, a walk led by systems ecologist Patrick Meire, and a performance by Plastique Fantastique. In the unique setting of the Kruibeke Polder, we will explore the material and ecological entanglements that shape our contemporary world and what it means to listen to landscapes characterised by both damage and restoration. Welcome!
