Schubert’s Trout Quintet

Oxalys with sparkling chamber music beside the castle pond

Schubert wrote just one piano quintet, but it did immediately become the most famous in his genre. Sadly Schubert was unable to enjoy its success himself, as the work was only published a year after his premature death. The line-up deviates from the classic combination of piano with string quartet: there is no second violin, but in the low regions the strings are reinforced by a double bass.  Schubert used the melody of his song Die Forelle [The Trout] as the theme for the wonderful variations of the quintet’s fourth movement, which is therefore known as the ‘Trout Quintet’. This is an ambitious and grandly conceived composition in which Schubert displays his mastery in the field of chamber music.
