  • Tan Dun – Water Concerto
  • Benjamin Britten – From Peter Grimes: Four Sea Interludes, op. 33a

In this concert in the imposing turbine hall of the old Interescaut power station, water is used to create sound in a variety of ways. The power of water is not just a musical presence but together with the industrial architecture of the turbine hall forms an essential part of the overall experience. Director Benoit de Leersnyder and festival dramaturg Jan Van den Bossche provide the concert with a unique scenography, in which space, music, and sustainability merge into an impressive whole.

In his beloved Moldau, the Czech composer Bedřich Smetana follows the mighty river of the same name from its source, through idyllic landscapes and proud Prague, to its mouth at the Elbe. In the suite of Four Sea Interludes, which the English composer Benjamin Britten extracted from his own opera Peter Grimes, the sea is a constant presence in the life of a small fishing village, sometimes gentle, sometimes threatening.

But the water sounds out most literally in Water Concerto by the Chinese-American composer Tan Dun, who is also a UNESCO Global Goodwill Ambassador and is known for pushing the boundaries of classical music by deploying multimedia and fusing Western and Eastern traditions. In this remarkable piece, two tubs of water are played as musical instruments in a virtuoso performance by soloist Lin Zhe.

A concerto that makes quite a splash

The story behind the location

Interescaut

Beside the Scheldt, at the mouth of the Rupel, you will find the former Interescaut power station. Where steam boilers and turbines once operated over a seventy-year period, there now stands a magnificent, vacant industrial site that hosts a variety of temporary projects, whilst awaiting its redevelopment by Revive. The impressive old turbine hall is the ideal location for this concert, promising you an unforgettable evening that will resonate long after.
