"In the beginning there was nothing.
It is difficult to imagine that.
Everything that’s here now you must not allow to be here yet.
You must turn out the light, and not be here yourself,
and then forget the dark too,
because in the beginning there was nothing, not even the dark.
If you want to see the beginning of everything, you must omit a great deal.
Including your mother.”

The first days of our planet lie in a distant past, but the Nederlands Blazers Ensemble brings them tangibly closer with its own version of Joseph Haydn’s oratorio hit Die Schöpfung. They invite author Bart Moeyaert to tell the story of creation afresh. And that is literally what he does during the performance, in his own inimitable way. With an endearing wonder, but also the necessary scepticism, he comments on God’s first working week, up to and including the day on which he rested.

The performance is a moving embodiment of the idea that music begins where words end
**** NRC Handelsblad

For Haydn’s magnificent music, the Nederlands Blazers Ensemble opts for the arrangement for wind instruments that his contemporary Josef Triebensee made of the oratorio. From all these ingredients, an entirely new work is created, an original ‘recreation’.

Programme

The Creation

  • Music: Joseph Haydn - parts from Die Schöpfung (arr. Josef Triebensee)
  • Text: Bart Moeyaert

Prior to the performance, there is a lecture organized by Davidsfonds given by Bible scholar Hans Ausloos. He returns to the source text of the creation story. Ausloos asks why the biblical creation texts were written, what their authors wanted to make clear and how they relate to other creation myths.
