In the dialogue about climate change, STROOM brings together a diverse array of partners. In the Port of Antwerp, there are 38 powerful wind turbines from VLEEMO, which together meet the energy needs of 91,000 households. Composer Peter Knockaert translated that wind power into music. With the help of a sophisticated algorithm developed by the University of Antwerp, he turned the data from the wind turbines into a playable score. During the concert, the voice of none other than Frank Deboosere explains how the process unfolded.

Flanders' most adventurous chamber orchestra, Casco Phil, rises to the challenge and brings this unique Windmill Symphony to life together with soprano Elise Caluwaerts. They also perform, among other things, the catchy 'classical' symphony by Sergei Prokofiev and the storm-at-sea concerto by Antonio Vivaldi

As an experiment, Windmill Symphony is quite captivating, particularly because during the performance, a large video screen shows how data is converted into music.

Windmill Symphony

Windmill Symphony is an innovative musical project that was set up two years ago by VLEEMO and Port of Antwerp-Bruges, in collaboration with Casco Phil and the University of Antwerp. For a whole year, researchers collected and analysed data on windmills every four minutes, such as wind direction, air pressure and wind speed. They subsequently used this information to create a symphony. The data determined the melodies, dynamics and accents in the music, while the conductor and orchestra shaped the orchestration. The result is a surprisingly coherent composition by Peter Knockaert. What’s more, the performance is paired with images of the data and a voice-over by none other than Frank Deboosere.
