In The Four Seasons, Antonio Vivaldi rendered the four seasons in sound as he knew them in the early eighteenth century. But the climate is changing. This caused Australian media artist Tim Devine and composer Hugh Crosthwaite to pause for thought: how would Vivaldi’s music sound in around 2050?

Based on data from the United Nations’ climate change panel (IPCC) and with the help of artificial intelligence, they translate the 300-year-old masterpiece into the likely state of our planet in 2050: The (Uncertain) Four Seasons.

Vivaldi’s storms sound more ominous, birdsong falls silent. The often intangible climate crisis becomes audible and palpable. The project has already been performed on six continents – from Sydney to Amsterdam, from Seoul to Cape Town, and from the Marshall Islands to São Paulo. The algorithm makes Vivaldi’s music sound different everywhere, depending upon the effects of climate change on the place where the performance is being staged. This version, especially composed for Stroom Festival, performed by Flanders Symphonic Orchestra, gives us the opportunity to hear and feel for the first time in Belgium how our own environment will change dramatically under the influence of humans if we do not take action.

The concert is preceded by a scientific explanation on climate change by environmental engineer Inge Jonckheere.

The project supports the United Nations’ worldwide campaign Act Now.
With the support of the Belgian Tax Shelter.
