Whirling Waters
Finely strung from east to west

The lute and the oud are distant cousins, a relationship that is also evident from the names of the two strumming instruments. But their kinship is above all audible! In this programme, lutist Sofie Vanden Eynde again shares the stage with her colleague, the Baghdad-based oud player Saad Mahmood Jawad. For several years now, they have been exploring the wonderful musical affinity of their instruments together. This time they play work from Renaissance composers Francesco da Milano and John Dowland, in which the tears flow freely. And from the Arabian peninsula and Mesopotamia, the musical stories travel via Armenia to Europe, in new compositions by Saad Mahmood Jawad and Vladimir Gorlinsky. The Tunisian singer Amel Sdiri bridges the distance between east and west with his unique voice.

Programme

  • Arabic traditional and European renaissance music, with new work by Vladimir Gorlinsky and Aftab Darvishi.

Debussy's Palette
Nicolas Callot & Lucas Blondeel engage in four-handed painting

Claude Debussy had enough with the eighty eight keys of his piano to depict the whole world. And with four hands instead of two, the palette becomes still more colourful. With the first movement of the Petite Suite, which is called En bateau, we are immediately sitting on the water. Also in the Six Épigraphes Antiques there is no shortage of natural impressions. From the first movement, which evokes Pan, the ‘god of the summer wind’ to the last, in which the morning rain is thanked. Pianists Nicolas Callot and Lucas Blondeel have for years been discovering the rich four-handed repertoire together. In this concert, each separately plays one of Debussy’s evocative Préludes, little gems of impressionist piano art.
