In The Carnaval of the Animals, the funniest work in classical music, composer Camille Saint-Saëns lets a colourful parade of animals pass by, from the lumbering elephant to the sluggish tortoise. At our request, five young composers from Belgium and the Netherlands each added an animal to the collection. The otter, the black grouse, the eel and the coral each struggle with climate change in their own way. But the jellyfish actually thrives. For this 'penultimate' Carnival of the Animals, festival thinker Jeroen Olyslaegers wrote a new text and puts on the top hat of the circus ringmaster to introduce the various animals to the audience himself.

A coproduction of Symfonieorkest Vlaanderen, Wonderfeel (NL) and STROOM

Come to the concert with DeWaterbus!

Did you know that STROOM takes place in the Scheldt Valley National Park? Peter, a policy officer for Nature & Spatial Planning, will be delighted to tell you more about it during your trip on the Waterbus to Fort Liefkenshoek in Kallo.

The Penultimate Carnival of the Animals focuses on endangered animal species, some of which can be found in the Scheldt Valley. Peter will dive deeper into their stories: Why do these species thrive here? What opportunities does the area offer for their survival, and what threats do they face? We will also highlight the efforts already being made to protect and enhance their habitats. An inspiring insight into the region’s rich biodiversity and the work of the Scheldt Valley National Park.

DeWaterbus departs from Hemiksem at 9:00 AM and from Antwerp at 9:30 AM. The introduction will start at 9:30 AM. DeWaterbus arrives at Fort Liefkenshoek at 10:23 AM. With your ticket, you can use DeWaterbus freely between 8:30 AM and 4:30 PM.

Fort Liefkenshoek

Fort Liefkenshoek is a historic fort on the Scheldt River, built in 1584 during the Eighty Years’ War by Alexander Farnese. It was used to control access to Antwerp, together with Fort Lillo. Later, it lost its military function. Today, it is a restored heritage site and museum where visitors can explore its history, soldiers’ lives, and the strategic importance of the Scheldt.
